Top Winter Skin and Facial Hair Care Tips
Temperature, humidity, sun and wind exposure can all have an impact on your hair and skin. To counter this, your daily routine may change from season to season. As June wears on, winter is fast reaching its peak in Australia. It is essential in the winter months to give your skin and facial hair the attention and care they need to ensure you continue to look and feel your best in the colder winter months. In this post we cover some of the big factors to think about when looking after yourself in winter.
1. SPF is still important
It's so easy to forget about UV protection in winter. It seems counter intuitive to worry about the sun when you can barely see or feel it. But even on cooler, overcast days, it is still important to wear SPF. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and cause damage to your skin. Exposure to UV rays can not only increase the likelihood you develop cancer, but they can also accelerate signs of ageing and cause fine lines and wrinkles to form.
2. Keep your face and beard nourished
Cold air holds less moisture than warm air, which can make the air in winter very drying on your skin and hair. If you've got a beard, you may have noticed that it feels rougher than usual on cold days. For this reason, ensure you use a beard oil to stop your beard from becoming dry, brittle and irritating. You should also look for a nourishing moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated, such as a moisturiser formulated with hyaluronic acid.
3. Wash your face and beard regularly
In the winter months look for a cleanser formulated with hydrating ingredients such as squalene, hemp or vitamin E. You should also cleanse your facial hair with a beard shampoo that cleanses your beard without stripping the natural oils from your skin.
Top tip: when you wash your face and beard, you could use a soft cotton or microfiber towel to pat your face dry. For a lot of folks, their everyday towel may be too rough on the skin. This may result in micro-tears in your complexion when you rub your face dry. Towels can also hold on to bacteria which you should not be rubbing into your face, unless you'd like to visit pimple town.
4. Stay hydrated
Good hydration is key for helping your body to remove toxins and waste products. It will also ensure good circulation of nutrients and oxygen from your blood to your hair and skin. But with the busy modern lifestyle and cooler weather, it can be easy to miss out on the humble glass of water. Many people opt for hot drinks, such as coffee and tea, in winter to keep themselves warm. Caffeinated drinks, however, do hot hydrate you as well as water. Remember to have a glass of water with every hot drink you have to keep your skin and hair hydrated and healthy.
