What Moustache Suits My Face?
Finding the best types of moustaches to grow can be a real challenge, to say the least. After all, there’s plenty of aspects you’ll need to consider - including your face shape, the many moustache styles, your facial features, and so much more.
Don’t you think that growing out your whiskers should be simple? We think so too, which is why we’ve made the process a lot easier for you. Below, we’ve listed the different types of moustaches and a step-by-step guide for choosing the best style for your face shape. Check it out!
How To Choose A Moustache Style
Before you settle on a moustache style, there are a few simple points that you’ll need to consider - including your face shape, facial features, and moustache thickness.
Face Shape
When it comes to choosing the perfect moustache for your mug, one of the most important aspects to consider is your face shape. Have you ever noticed that some styles of moustaches look amazing on some blokes, and unflattering on others? This is largely due to the shape of their face.
By understanding and knowing what kind of face shape you have, you can pick a mo’ style that’ll suit you best.
Facial Features
When trying to choose the right moustache style for your face, you may want to consider some of your facial features as well. Ask yourself how a mo’ could help to compliment your look.
For example, guys with thinner lips can use larger, full moustaches to add volume and create stronger-looking lips. Or, blokes with softer facial features can use a unique mo’ style to help define their appearance.
That being said, don’t let face shape or facial features stop you if you want to rock a specific style - it’s your ‘stache, you’re in control!
Length & Thickness
Finally, it’s also worth considering the length and thickness of the moustache style you’re working towards. Are you willing to put in the time to look after styles that require regular upkeep? Or are you chasing a low-maintenance shape that doesn’t require as much attention?
Answering these simple questions will help you steer towards the best moustache style you are looking for.
How To Know Your Face Shape
To choose the best moustache style to compliment your features, you’ll need to learn how to know your face shape. Luckily, the process couldn’t be easier - all you need is a tape measure and a notepad to get started.
Measure Your Forehead
So, the first thing you’ll need to measure when figuring out your face shape is your forehead. Grab the measuring tape and measure from the widest point - which is usually the peak of one eyebrow arch to the other. Once you’ve got the result, write it down.
Measure Your Cheekbones
Once you’ve got your forehead measurement, it’s time to do your cheeks. Measure the distance between each peak of your cheekbones, which you’ll find underneath the outer corner of your eyes.
Measure Your Jawline
Now, it’s time to put the focus on your jawline. Determine the widest point of your jawline (which is typically about an inch below your earlobe) and measure down to your chin. Instead of doing both sides, you can simply double this measurement.
Measure Your Face Length
Lastly, you’re going to need to measure your face’s total length. Simply run the tape measure from the centre of your hairline and to the point of your chin. Make sure you’ve got a precise result, then write it down with all the other measurements.
Find your Face Shape
Now that you’ve got the measurements of your face, you can check the results against all the face shapes and see what category you fall under. As you’re assessing the measurements, it’s important to focus on the largest one - as this will likely dictate your face shape.
1. Oval
With an oval shape, your face length will be larger than your cheekbones. The forehead’s length will also be larger than the jawline. The jawline may also have a rounded angle.
2. Round
Blokes with a round face shape will notice that the cheekbones and face length have approximately the same size. Both of these measurements will be greater than the forehead and jawline - which will also have roughly the same measurement.
3. Triangle
The largest measurement on a triangular face shape is the jawline, followed by the cheekbones, then the forehead. The face length will often vary.
4. Square
For a square face shape, all the results will be about the same - though the angle of the jawline may appear slightly sharper.
5. Heart
As for the heart face shape, the length of the forehead will be larger than both the jawline and cheekbones. The chin may also have a slight point.
6. Oblong
Now, for the oblong (or rectangle) face shape - the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline will roughly have the same measurement. Though the length of your face will be the largest.
7. Diamond
For guys with a diamond face shape, your face length will be the largest measurement, followed by the cheekbones, forehead, and jawline.
8. Rectangle
A rectangle face shape will have a relatively longer face length, whilst the forehead & jawline measurements will be the same (or close to it).
9. Inverted Triangle
In this case the forehead measurement will be significantly larger than the jawline and a chin that comes to a point will accentuate this shape.
The Best Types Of Moustaches To Grow
Once you understand what face type you have, finding the best moustache styles becomes much easier. Below, we’ve listed a few popular styles of moustaches, and the face types that suit them best. Take a look!
Handlebar Moustache
First up on our list of the different types of moustaches to grow, we have the classic Handlebar Moustache. Named for its resemblance to a set of bike handlebars, this particular moustache style took its stride in the ’70s. Though, today it’s become the go-to style for many mustachioed men.
The Handlebar Moustache is a much longer mo’ style, featuring a slight upward curve on each end. These moustaches typically take around 2-3 months to grow - so be patient!. The results are worth it.
Face Shape For Handlebar Moustache: A Handlebar Moustache will look most flattering on guys with a triangle or diamond face shape.
Chevron Moustache
Next up, we have the Chevron Moustache - a full, thick style with the ends angled down toward the corners of the mouth. The base of the Chevron is neatly groomed, with the hairs finishing at the top of the lip.
This particular style was popular in the ’80s when actor Tom Selleck rocked it in the popular television series: Magnum.
Face Shape For Chevron Moustache: What we love about the Chevron moustache is that it works great with every face shape - particularly blokes with an oval or square face shape.
Horseshoe Moustache
The Horseshoe Moustache is one of the bolder mo’ styles and was made popular by the iconic wrestler Hulk Hogan in the 70s and 80s.
What makes this full ‘stache style so eye-catching is the two straight lines that extend past the corners of the mouth and finish down on the jawline - creating the shape of an inverted horseshoe.
Face Shape For Horseshoe Moustache: For guys with a round face shape, the horseshoe moustache is a worthy choice.
Pencil Moustache
For guys chasing a truly unique and old-fashion ‘stache style, consider the pencil moustache - made popular by Hollywood icons like Clark Gable and Errol Flynn in the ’30s and ’40s.
The style features a very thin line of facial hair running along the top of the lip and a larger gap between the nose and top of the mo’. Its width is about half an inch and looks like it’s been drawn on by a pencil (hence its name).
Face Shape For Pencil Moustache: Since the pencil moustache is one of the smaller mo’ styles, it best suited to guys with an oval or heart face shape.
Walrus Moustache
If you’re partial to those longer-styled mo’s, another old-fashion shape to consider is the Walrus Moustache - often worn by gentlemen in the late 1800s. It’s a lengthy, bushier ‘stache made famous by Sam Elliot.
When it comes to creating a Walrus Moustache, the process is pretty straightforward - all you need to do is let the facial hair grow as long as possible. Grab a comb and train the hairs to grow straight down, allowing them to droop over the mouth - mimicking the walrus.
Face Shape For Walrus Moustache: The walrus moustache is a rugged style and looks most flattering on guys with an oval-shaped face.
